Splitting A Pair

Splitting
pairs is one of the more better-known blackjack basic strategies, and it was
first introduced to help players bring down the casino’s house advantage a notch or two. However,
splitting pairs is usually not always
used very effectively, so let’s see how to make this blackjack strategy
work for you.

You can split
a pair when you have a hand with two cards of the same value, such as a 2 of
Hearts and a 2 of Clubs. You split the pair by placing an equal chip right next to the original wager. Don’t put your additional chip on top – that means you want to double up (more on that later). Placing your chip
adjacent to the original lets the dealer know that you want to split your hand.

So which hands should you split? Not all cards are equal. For instance, it’s recommended to split a pair of aces (totalling 11) as splitting will give you a much two chances to land two stronger hands. It’s also a good idea to split eights, to potentially improve a hand of 16. Never split a pair of 10 though, as by splitting you might be sacrificing a really good hand. Low numbers aren’t recommended to split either.   Why is splitting such a useful blackjack strategy? Because with this strategy you could transform a weak hand into a winning one with one wager or one click, and potentially win more money.

Doubling Down – Hard And Soft Hands

Do you need a
good blackjack basic strategy to help you break even or even possibly win when
your odds are not looking good? Then
doubling down is the blackjack strategy you need.

Doubling down is when you’re given the opportunity to double your initial wager, however, you will then only be able to draw one more card. To double, simply place an equal chip on top of your first wager. Some casinos will have different rules on when you can double down: you can usually double down on any two cards but some casinos may only allow it when you draw a hand of 10 or 11. So, when should you double down? You usually should double down when you have the hard 8, 9, 10, and 11 cards. A hard hand is a hand that doesn’t include an ace.

But what happens when your hand includes an ace (known as a soft hand)? If your hand includes an ace and an eight card or higher, it doesn’t make much sense to double.

The Rule Of Nine

An easy way to decide whether you should double down or not on a soft hand can be summarised below:

• If your
  dealer’s up-card and your non-ace card add up to nine or more, then double
  down.
• If the sum
  of the dealer’s card and your non-ace add up to less than nine, then you can
  hit.
• Never
  double down when the dealer holds a seven or higher.
• Never
  double down when the dealer holds an ace either.

Surrendering A Hand

The blackjack
strategy of surrendering a hand can be confusing, due to its misleading name.
When you surrender a hand, it doesn’t
mean that you’re surrendering the
game, and can be a highly useful strategy.

So, how does
it work? After having a look at your two-card hand as well as the dealer’s
up-card, and the cards just aren’t looking so good, you can apply this method and surrender half of your wager. The dealer will then take half of
your wager, as well as your two cards and will place them in the discard pile.

You might be
asking why this blackjack strategy is so great if you’re losing half your wager? You’re
losing 50% of your wager instead of potentially losing all of it, so you can
retain half your stake for the next hand. 

Hitting And Standing

Our last blackjack strategy for today is
a summary of hitting and standing.
This is the bread and butter of playing a
game of blackjack, whether online, live or at the casino.

When you hit, you’re asking the dealer for another card and when you stand, it means that you’re happy with cards you’ve been dealt and don’t want any additional cards.

So, when should you hit and when should you stand?

Well, this all depends on what your dealer’s holding:

• If the
  dealer has an ace, they have a high chance of hitting a 10 value card (10,
  Jack, Queen or King), so you should aim to have a hand of 17 or over.
• If the
  dealer has a 10 card, they still have a strong chance of hitting 20. So we
  recommend you hit until 17 or higher to give yourself the strongest hand you
  can.
• If your
  dealer has between seven and nine, at least they won’t be able to hit a
  Blackjack with their third card, but they can still get a high hand.  Hit until 17.
• If your
  dealer has a card worth four up to six, you could potentially stand on anything
  above 12.
• If your
  dealer has a two, you can hit up to a value of nine, but it’s wise to stand on
  a hand of 13.

DOT and the Cisco Foundation announce a partnership to develop a youth-led response to the global climate challenge

Responding to the calls to action from youth within DOT’s network across Africa and the Middle East – young people who are living through some of the worst impacts of the climate emergency – Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) today announces a new area of focus that leverages its proven, impact driven, youth-led model in response to the climate crisis. With support from the Cisco Foundation, young women and men will develop solutions that leverage digital tools, the creativity of young people and the power of DOT’s network of young leaders to increase community awareness and resilience to the local shocks and stresses caused by climate change.

The initial project will establish a foundation for solutions that can demonstrate, motivate and mobilize thousands of other young leaders of change and millions of citizens to take action that contributes to climate resilience in their own communities.

The ‘Youth-led Community Climate Awareness and Action’ project embraces the principles of digital inclusion, women’s empowerment and the belief in young people as leaders of change. DOT and Cisco believe that communities can experience an inclusive green transition when young people are empowered with the skills, tools and technology to lead in their communities. 

Over the next 12 months, DOT will consult with climate experts, co-design and digitize programmatic interventions with youth, run community-based pilots to test and verify a youth-led climate program and toolkit for dissemination in 2024. 

Building on a legacy of youth-led community development

The Youth-led Community Climate Awareness and Action project will be realized through DOT’s youth-led model, a unique model which mobilizes a movement of local youth, and empowers them with the skills, tools, and knowledge to lead community transformation. With over 20 years of proven impact, the model has reached 3 million community members.  

Deeply interconnected with livelihoods, human rights and inclusion, climate change is creating serious impacts to other global challenges. Young people, particularly young women, are incredibly vulnerable to climate change impacts. With the support of the Cisco Foundation, the project is rooted in the voices and lived realities of young people as witnessed in the DOT network. Addressing climate change is both an opportunity and a prerequisite for youth to thrive in an inclusive digital economy – DOT and Cisco will lead the way. 

DOT Founder and CEO, Janet Longmore, says: “At the heart of DOT’s mission, is the belief that young people — equipped with the knowledge, skills and the support and trust of the international development ecosystem — will apply their energy, creativity and impatience to lead community-based grassroots climate response at an incredible pace and scale. DOT has proven that one young person mobilized through skills, confidence and a network of support, working alongside governments, the private sector, civil society and their communities, can reach hundreds of others, increasing the collective resilience to local climate change shocks and stresses”.

She adds: “By creating a movement of digitally-savvy youth with the skills, confidence and attitudes to transform their communities, DOT has been working for 21 years to advance digital inclusion. This is why we are committed to extending our youth-led model to address the climate crisis. The model positions young women and men as climate champions who will build climate awareness among their peers and citizens, advocate for climate action, and innovate in the green economy. We are starting in Tanzania and Lebanon and we intend to scale to other countries in the Middle East and Africa”. 

A long-term partnership with the Cisco Foundation

DOT and Cisco have a long history collaboration. Starting 21 years ago, when the Cisco Foundation supported the initial development and implementation of the youth-led model, through the present day, the organizations have worked together in the Middle East, Africa, the USA, China and Mexico – driven by a shared belief in the potential of young people and the power of technology to lead responsible change.

Peter Tavernise, Climate Impact and Regeneration Portfolio lead of the Cisco Foundation, notes: “An effective response to climate change, and the reinforcing of climate action and resilience in all communities requires the efforts of everyone. We have always valued DOT’s channels to youth and the organization’s ability to engage young people as respected leaders who bring the creativity, concerns and the voices of youth to the table.”

It’s been quite a quiet week and it’s a shame that the jumps meetings have been cancelled over the next couple of days. It can’t be helped, though, these things happen, and you just have to get the horses looked after and try and find them new targets. It did look as if a lot of the races I was due to ride in this weekend would have been nice starting points for the horses, but we’ll just have to try and find something else for them now.

I’m especially disappointed not to be able to ride Angels Breath at Market Rasen. I had some nice-looking rides there and also at Uttoxeter, so it’s annoying but that’s the way it goes!

Five to Follow

The Real Whacker was fantastic last season, jumping as well as he did and showing a natural attitude towards his chasing. I think he could, potentially, have a really exciting season. He’s still looking very much unexposed, so – hopefully – he’ll have another good one. I imagine that the long-term goal for him would be the Gold Cup, but we’ll have to see how he gets on. Paddy [Neville] did a great job of campaigning him last year and I’m sure he’ll do the same again.

Weveallbeencaught has been schooling and working nicely and, while he only ended up having the one win last year, we’d always thought he’d be a better horse over fences. He’s a fine specimen of a horse, and the idea with him this season is just to find him a nice starting point and get going from there. We’ll let him tell us what to do.

Inoui Machin was a bumper horse of Neil Mulholland’s last season. He won his bumpers nicely and will go novice hurdling this time. He’s done lots and lots of jumping at home, he’s a nice frame of a horse and is looking like he’ll hopefully give us all some fun this season.

Stolen Silver was a brilliant horse last season. He won well the other day, jumping beautifully and still seems somewhat unexposed over the three miles. He could be aimed at the Coral Cup. He went up seven pounds for his last run, and I initially thought that this could been harsher, actually, given the context of the race, as there were a lot of non-runners, there was a lot of rain and it was his first time over three miles, but I thought he got the trip really well. What I noticed, most interestingly of all, was how well he relaxed during the race, compared to how he went before. That outing has just opened up another door for him which, potentially, could be quite interesting. He seems to have come along mentally since last season, because he’s not jumping off and wanting to tear away anymore. He’s by no means a young horse at eight-years-old, but maybe he’s eventually starting to learn!

Our Power was a bit keen when we last saw him in the Grand National, but he travelled really well in the end. He’ll start his season in the Pertemps Qualifier at Cheltenham next weekend, which will be a very nice starting point for him. He’s a very nice, likeable horse of Sam Thomas’ with a nice way of going who had a great season, winning a nice handicap at Kempton in February. He’ll also be targeted at the Coral Cup, but perhaps the National – or maybe the Scottish National – could be an option again. He’s proven that he’s got the ability to do it, so we’d like to see him go and win one of those.

And, one for luck, don’t forget about Good Risk At All. He’s a lovely type who jumps well and there’s plenty to come from him yet!

The Global Gaming Expo (G2E) 2023, was held in Las Vegas over last week, drawing more than 25,000 gaming professionals from more than 125 countries to Sin City. Organized by the American Gaming Association (AGA) and RX, the event spanned from October 7 to 12.

The 23rd edition of G2E covered an expansive exhibition space of over 269,000 square feet, hosting 368 exhibitors. This year’s event was particularly significant, as the famous Nevada casino venues on the Las Vegas Strip have been seeing a surge in visitors and revenues in 2023.

The Expo hosted a series of keynote speeches from top gambling executives, including CEOs of top-dog sports betting operators FanDuel and DraftKings, as well as leaders from MGM Resorts International and Entain, who partner to provide BetMGM online services.

As well as speeches, the 300 gambling operators present at G2E displayed their latest wares and games. That included the first look at Light & Wonder’s upcoming Squid Game slot machine with Netflix, previews of the full range of Aristocrat’s NFL-branded slots, and IGT’s upcoming Whitney Houston-branded music slots.

“Gaming is stronger than ever, and the products and ideas displayed at G2E this week will enhance our industry’s offerings not just here in Las Vegas, but around the world,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller at the event.

CEO Keynotes: Insights and Forecasts

Amy Howe of FanDuel and Jason Robins of DraftKings may be rivals for the number one U.S. sportsbook title, but last Wednesday, they jointly addressed the crowd in Las Vegas.

The two spoke on the situation with daily fantasy sports right now, as well as the wider U.S. sport betting market. They confirmed that neither party has received formal cease and desist notices in Florida, New York, or Michigan – the three states where regulators are cracking down on DFS operations that stray to close to sports betting.

Neither seemed unduly worried about the news, but they both said they’d appreciate more clarification.

“We want to be able to compete, so we want to be able to offer the same things that anyone else out there offers. Then once you do that, it’s competitive and great for the consumer and whoever has the best experience, that’s the best operation comes out on top,” said Robins.

“So I think for us, you know, having clarity on what we can do, what we can’t do, is important. And I think the same goal should be applied to everybody.”

MGM’s CEO on Cyberattacks and Online Potential

Meanwhile, Bill Hornbuckle, CEO of MGM Resorts, provided insights into the challenges faced by the company in recent weeks. That understandably included some talk of the recent cyberattack that hit the company, which ended up costing it over $100 million in damages.

Hornbuckle said he was proud of his company’s response. It refused to pay out a ransom to cyberattackers, unlike rival Las Vegas-based operator Caesars Entertainment. Despite the setback for MGM, the biggest U.S. gambling operator, Hornbuckle believes his company did the right thing.

“We’re proud of what we did. We did not pay ransom, not that that’s the defining moment in one of these things,” he said, during his G2E interview.

“I know people say don’t pay a ransom. But the way this came at us and the velocity at which it came at us, we reacted quickly. We protected data. We find ourselves now a couple of weeks into this thing fully functioning.”

Lastly, Jette Nygaard-Andersen of European operator Entain discussed the strength of their and MGM’s online betting partnership, BetMGM.

“It is a great marriage. And we work really well together,” she said.

“The combination of intense technology and experience from online sports betting and iGaming across the world with MGM’s brand, omnichannel experience, and their reward database– it’s a really, really strong combination. We work really well together, and we’re fully focused on what we want to achieve.”

When asked about rumors that the collaboration could end sometime soon with MGM submitting another multibillion bid to buy out Entain, Nygaard-Andersen remained tight-lipped.

“Now, I get it, joint ventures don’t last forever. But for now, it’s not something that we need to solve for,” she said.

New Releases Shine

As well as CEO speeches and insight, visitors to the G2E Convention were treated to a whole host of previews of brand new slot machines and other casino games. That included brand-new games by Aristocrat, IGT, and Light & Wonder.

Light & Wonder unveiled its latest slot machine, inspired by the globally popular Netflix series Squid Game. The $400,000 jackpot slot game is themed around the macabre and deadly games from the hit series that were much-memed around the world’s social media in 2021. It marks the first collaboration between streaming giant Netflix and a gambling operator.

Not to be outdone, International Game Technology, or IGT, revealed its new series of slots based around the music and life of the late superstar singer Whitney Houston. The series features a custom soundsystem in the new SkyRise cabinet, with a 55-inch monitor and a progressive jackpot wheel.

Meanwhile, Aristocrat took the opportunity to showcase its partnership with the NFL. The official branded football-themed slots launched SuperBowl Jackpots in June. But the upcoming full selection of titles was on display at G2E throughout the week.

Online sports betting operators have long had partnerships with sports franchises and teams, but a series of licensed casino slots with America’s premier sports league is a first for U.S. gamblers.

This included new slot games like Super Bowl Link, Winning Drive, NFL Kick Off and Ring of Victory. The operator promoted the games with a giant football helmet entrance to their display, with the machines taking pride of place in a small scale model End Zone, complete with goalposts.
